High steps: Bob Gaines of Newcastle went with Courage in his backpack but still didn't reach the summit of Mount Rainier.
Gaines and six friends tried to climb Mount Rainier earlier this month as a benefit for Bellevue's Kindering Center . They hoped to raise $20,000 for the nonprofit neurological-development center, which provides therapy for special-needs infants and small children.
It was a personal quest for Gaines. His 6-year-old daughter, Kara, has cerebral palsy. He credits Kara's learning to walk, talk and feed herself to the physical therapy she received at Kindering.
The seven men each carried a small stuffed lion, Kindering's new mascot called Courage, along with 60 to 70 pounds of gear.
The group reached Camp Schurman, a base camp. When they got up at midnight for the final ascent, they were buffeted by snow and hail.
Gaines said he is depressed about not getting to the top of the mountain and reaching only $13,000 of his $20,000 goal.
"This was supposed to be my payback to Kindering Center ," Gaines said.
"My brother and I have rescheduled the trip for August. We hope to finish raising the $20,000 and make the top of Rainier then."
